Historical overview

The kaba with garnet or violin is the most complete and perfect form of folk instrumental music in the south and throughout Albania. It can undoubtedly be compared to the instrumental concert of cultivated music. The kaba is both an individualized and authentic musical genre and form that is associated with musical features that vary according to ethnocultural areas. In a sense, the kabaja itself is a reflection of the birth and development of southern folk music and particularly of the perfection of this musical language. The findings points out that the first kabats were created in the first decade of the century. XXs to culminate later in the years 1920-1960. The evolution of the instrumental musical language of sazes cannot be understood without knowing and studying the structure and emotional content of kaba.

Closely related to the traditional folk formations and the later ones (Sazet), the kaba represents today the essence of the folk instrumental musical repertoire. What can be asserted is that kaba is not a new type of genre. Its origin in the thematic plan can be considered from two sources:

  1. pastoral kaba originating from the music with traditional instruments,
  2. lamentation kaba originating partly from the traditional folk vocal music.
